Praise the Lord for...

This was our final week looking at some of the aspects of prayer. We really have only scratched the surface, but at least the children have been introduced to an important topic. The prayer that Jesus taught his Discliples, saying sorry for the wrong things we do and trusting God for the answers.

So this week we rounded it off with praise and thanks giving. Reminding ourselves not to forget God's goodness to us, for He is a God worthy of our praise.

Trust

This week sees possibly the most challenging aspect of Prayer. Trusting God for the answer! We are perhaps more comfortable with actions that we can have responsibility for, trust takes away our control. But what an example of trust David was, as a shepherd he had faced very difficult situations, and was quick to acknowledge that it was God who had seen him through these trials. This knowledge that he could trust God served him well when he met Goliath. Davis was also the writer of many psalms including Psalm 23, which indicates his trust in God.

Honour

Well this week we were all together again for a Praise Party. It was a challenge to present what it means to Honour God. Not in the material things that we can offe, but with the attitude of our hearts. We identified 3 key elements.
1) Respect- The god who made the universe, how awesome is that, we must remeber and respect the awesomeness that God represents.
2) Pride - to remember in positive and pleased way that the same God, takes an interest in each of us as individuals.
3) Honesty - afterall if God made the whole universe, and knows us better than we know ourselves, how can we think we can deceive Him?

psalm 51

This week we looked at an important part of prayer. The fact that we all get it wrong sometimes, and need to say sorry to others as well as remembering to say sorry to God.

Provision

This week saw the first Praise Party of the term. We thought it appropriate to look at what God provides, since next week we will all be together for the harvest service.

Talking to God.

We started our new series opening up the topic of prayer. Teaching this accross the ages is a challenge. For the very little ones we introduced the fact that Prayer is a way of "talking" with God. The other groups were able to develop these ideas further, and over the coming weeks we will use the Psalms to look at a number of aspects of prayer.

Ready for a new term...

Well we were all set to go, when we heard the exciting news that one of the young people was going to be baptised in the morning. For those that don't know, in a Baptist Church this happens by the person going completey underwater, before coming up again. Often these celebrations take place in the evening, so we took the opportunity for all ofthe children to see what Baptism is about, and our littlies all got to come back to look at the Baptistry (bit like a funny shaped bath) after the service. One little chap said "I'm looking, but I'm NOT going in!"

Summer is coming....28th July to 1st August is..

For those in Buckinghamshire, Lighthouse may well be familiar. A week long club run by churches working together, to provide a Holiday club for children aged 4-11 years old. There are fun, games, story's, singing, craft and so much more to the week.

There are several venues, as a church we are involved in the High Wycombe site, based at the RGS, but have also supported the Hazlemere site for many years.

There's a website for bookings www.lighthouseadmin.org and this can also link you to some Lighthouse websites.

It's a great week. many teenagers come back to help as lamplighters and then enjoy some down time at Fresh Cafe for 2 evenings (30th & 31st July).

Story time

We have been looking at the Bible over the past weeks with teh children. Often they hear "set stories" that have originated from the Bible, but they don't understand that the Bible is a book in itself. It's been good to bring some of the themes together.

Let God lead the way...

photograph courtesy of christianphotos.net

This week we looked at the story of Abraham, who' trust in God was so strong, he left the land he had grown up in to follow Gods lead. Sometimes he would not really understand what God was about, but this did not dampen his faith. He relied on God, because he knew that God had a plan.

All things bright...

For the next few weeks we will be looking at the Bible, rather than consider individual stories in the Bible, we will look at the fact that the Bible fits together as a complete book. Giving information from how things came to be, to promises about the future and many things in between. It aslo has examples of how others have put their faith in God.

stuck up a tree?

What do you do when you're too short to see through the crowd and too unpopular for the crowd to help. Well Zaccheus found himself facing this problem. His solution? was to climb a tree. His hope was to see Jesus go by, but the Lord knew that Zaccheus needed more than that small hope. Zaccheus not only saw Jesus, he met him in such a way that it literally changed his life. Have we met this same Jesus?

let the children come..

This week we looked at Jesus' attitude to the children. Even his friends had not recognised how diferently jesus viewed people. In a society where children were not valued, Jesus told the leaders that they could learn a lot from the children and their attitudes. Today we have the same challenge, how do we view the children that we know?

We also learnt that God does not set age limits for those that can know him, we are never to young or to old.

A listening ear.

Well this week we looked at Mary and Martha. In today's society we always seem to be busy, DOING something even if it's fun. Martha would understand that, but the Bible tells us that Mary chose a beter way, because Mary took time out to LISTEN to what was ebing said. Are we wiling to stop our busyness so that we have time to listem?

Time to Change.

ALL CHANGE

The 18th of May is now going to be a "Civic Service" which includes the Mayor and other attending. So We are moving the Prais party to June 22nd. We would still love you to join us for either of these services, or indeed both, Both will start at 10:15

Allsorts

No not the liquorice type.

Today we learnt that God is able to and wants to use all sorts of people. He doesn't judge them from what he sees on the outside, but from how they respond to Him.

Growing in Grace

Well as well as some fun together, their were the ususal crazy games, and some cunning craft, see the puppet above.

We learnt a little of what it was like for Mary & Joseph, imagine their shock and fear as they realised that their son was not with them on the journey home. After much searching he was found safe. We also had a look at what it means to grow in God's Grace, making choices that help our friendship with God grow and flourish.

Do come and join us for our next Fun filled morning. Sunday 18th May 10:15 am - 12:00 noon.

Fishing for something?

We have begun a series looking at people who actually met Jesus, and their reactions.

This week we spoke of 4 fishermen, who followed at the first request. Do we follow easily, and who do we follow. These men chose to follow Jesus, aware that he was different, yet not fully aware at that time that they were indeed following the son of God.

That's what friends are for...

This week we looked at the friendship between David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 23.
These two had developed a very close friendship which meant they were able to encpurage and support one another. Do we encourage our friends? do our friends encourage us? These were some of the questions we asked the children.

He was how old?

Today we looked at the story of King Joash, 2 kings 11-12. He became a King who was faithful to God at the age of 7. We too can serve God, all be it in simple ways, we learnt today that we are not too young to live the life that God leads.

Easter Day

We will be satying together in Church to celebrate the fact that Christ is Risen. Come back to find out what we learnt.

So what happened. We stayed in together to celebrate the fact that following Jesus' death on Good Friday, that he was raised from the dead 3 days later. That was the first Easter. Those who were there found this amazing, some believed others doubdted. We are the same today, the Truth is True, however we sometimes find the truth harder to accept. Jesus is Alive, do you accept this.

Palm Sunday

Once again the children (3-11 years) were altogether, we met some rather "shy spies" who were looking at what made Palm Sunday special. They found out about people waving palm branches to celebrate Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is only part of the story though, and this coming weekend is the most significant, what will we learn then?

Sunday, March 9, 2008

A promise is a promise.

This week the children looked at the story of Abraham & Sarah. God made a promise to them, that seemed impossible. However, nothing is impossible for God, and He did keep His promise to them.

Feeling sheepish

This week "Great Grandma" came to church, but she was a bit sheepish.
Apart from the very little ones we all stayed intogether: Great Grandma helped remind us that
Sheep need a shepherd to guide them, children have parents to guide them, and we all need God to be guiding us. It was Mothers Day, so some of the children managed to make gifts during there service as well.

Different type of Banquet

This week we looked at a father and son. The son went off, wasted his inheritance, then, realised he'd got it so wrong.....
so he went back to say sorry and ask to be a servant, but his father restored him to the family, and yep, they had a party to celebrate.
Some of the children made biscuits that looked like pigs, needless to say they were eaten well before any camera could get near, sorry :-)

A banquet

This week in our Hope Street Praise Party we heard the parable of the banquet that Jesus told. We also made our favourite food out of salt dough. Here's a piece of pizza!
